The LAMP Recognizes Tom Gray’s Commitment to Media Literacy for NYC Youth at Annual Summer Soirée

On Tuesday, June 19, The LAMP held its 2016 Summer Soiree celebrating nine years of bringing technology and media education to New York City youth and families.

Held at the beautiful Hudson Hotel’s Library Bar, Capalino’s Senior Vice President Tom Gray, a long-term supporter and Executive Board Member of The LAMP, was honored for his devotion to the organization and commitment to media literacy programs.

During the event, D.C. Vito, Co-Founder of The LAMP, reminisced on how the organization came to be after sitting down to pitch the idea to then Councilmember Bill de Blasio in 2007.

Since its founding, The LAMP has offered curriculum to educators, students and parents that empowers them to live, learn and create with media and technology. Programs teach students how to comprehend, create and critique media and technology, as well as meet the needs, skills and interests of the young people participating in them.

The LAMP is redefining technology’s use as a tool to develop critical thinking skills around the way young people consume and are influenced by media. A clear example of this is MediaBreaker, an online learning platform where educators and after-school program leaders can design unique digital learning experiences using commercials, music videos, news clips, etc. Along with the tool, The LAMP offers short-term programs called Break-a-thons that focus on a theme like political advertising, and allow youth to analyze the media around this theme by creating a multimedia essay.
