Capalino Hosts Expert Panel on Affordable Housing in NYC
Capalino Kicks Off New Impact Breakfast Series
On Wednesday April 5, 2017, Capalino hosted An Expert Panel Discussion on Affordable Housing in NYC, the first breakfast panel of our new Impact series. Each event in the series will focus on issues of importance to Capalino clients, including energy, environmental and sustainability concerns, corporate social responsibility, zoning and land use, and more.
Chief Executive Officer James Capalino welcomed 75+ real estate and affordable housing professionals to The Library at the Public Theater, where Capalino’s Claire Altman, Executive Vice President of Affordable Housing + Community Development, and Richard Barth, Executive Vice President of Housing + Real Estate Strategies, moderated the discussion.
This forum fostered a discussion about the challenges and opportunities for affordable housing development in 2017 in New York.
Panelists for the event included:
- RuthAnne Visnauskas, Commissioner of NYS Housing and Community Renewal
- Eric Enderlin, President of NYC Housing Development Corporation
- Richard Roberts, Managing Director of Acquisitions at Red Stone Equity
- Kirk Goodrich, Director of Development at Monadnock Development
Commissioner Visnauskas and President Enderlin discussed the range of State and City housing programs and resources, and how the agencies are working together on project financing and other issues to ensure a robust affordable housing program. They also identified new approaches such as revisiting some of the project guidelines to increase flexibility. Panelists addressed a range of topics, including pending revisions to the 421a tax legislation, potential implications of federal budget cuts and tax changes, the one-year old Mandatory Inclusionary Housing (MIH) program, and the Zoning for Quality and Affordability (ZQA) zoning amendment. The panelists emphasized the importance of a comprehensive approach that addresses a broad range of community needs–from education to healthcare–to ensure that affordable housing, coupled with other investments, contributes to the development of vibrant communities.
